Preparing For the Storm: Part V

In this series, we’re discussing preparing for economic storms. The fourth and last step I recommend is decreasing payroll.

Many large organizations start with massive layoffs without considering other solutions, putting their employees into precarious positions.

Previously, I worked for a bank that frequently downsized. One year, the bank creatively allowed 40-hour employees to shift to 35 hours a week.

The option gave more flexibility for working parents. It allowed many working mothers to arrive home earlier for their kids. Their pay decreased, but the result was more time with their families.

Many people chose that option, significantly reducing the bank’s payroll expense without letting go of any of their employees.

James 1:5 says, “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”

The following verse encourages readers not to doubt the Lord. If you are struggling financially, trust that the Lord has a path set for you. As James 1:6 reminds us “for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.”

During tough payroll decisions, ask God for divine wisdom.

Questions For Reflection

  • Could shortening your employees’ hours help ease the financial strain? Would some employees be willing to switch to part time?
  • Have you asked the Lord for guidance during this time? Who else could you lean on for emotional if not financial support? Do you have a home church or a church community?
