Prepare for an Encounter

Step out from the crowd

Read Luke 19:1-10. Jesus goes to Zacchaeus’ home.

Verse 3 says of Zacchaeus: ”And he wanted to see who Jesus was.”

There was great excitement in Jericho and the crowds gathered around Jesus. Zacchaeus was one of many who wanted to have a glimpse of Jesus but he couldn't see him over the crowds because he was short.

Then came the moment when he stepped out of the crowd and was determined to not be held back by his height.

He went from, “I would like to see Him” to, “I must see Him.”

Zacchaeus’ decision to act seemed a bit unusual then but set him apart from the crowd and serves as an example to us now. The Bible tells us (verse 4) “he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to pass that way.”

Zacchaeus thought that Jesus would be coming down the road in a certain direction and he positioned himself to be able to see him. Nowhere does the Bible state he shouted out to Jesus or drew attention to himself, but Jesus knew where to find him and He called him by name.

God sees and knows the heart that is searching for Him. God knows where you are!

“But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love.” Psalm 33:18 (NIV)

Prayer

Lord, I have a desire to see you for who you really are as you see me where I'm at. Help tune my head and my heart to step out and seek you.

Journalling

Consider where you are spiritually.

Reflect and compare your spiritual desire with that of Zacchaeus, e.g. “I would like to see Jesus” or “I must see Jesus!”

Q: What circumstances or people limit your view?

Q: What spiritual and practical preparations should you make to be ready for an encounter?
