THE WEIGHT OF GRIEF

This woman was a widow with nothing left to her name, and the creditors were coming to take what was most precious to her if she didn’t pay her debts—her two sons. Imagine her fear, knowing that she truly was dependent upon a miracle. Her only choice was to be vulnerable about her state of desperation as she cried out to Elisha for help. When he asked her what resources she had, she told him she only had a small jar of olive oil. His response was for her to make herself even more vulnerable by setting out to the neighbors’ houses and asking for whatever jars they had available, taking as many as she could get. While her circumstances were not preferable, and her grief was great, this story sets the stage for the miracle-working power of God.

It feels scary when you find yourself in a situation wondering, “How will I go on? What if this doesn’t get better?”

The very practical needs of this widow's family were more than provided for as every jar was overflowing with oil, creating enough to pay her debts and sustain them for the future. Because the widow was honest about her situation, her scarcity became the avenue for God’s abundant harvest. The same is true about your needs—when you invite God to help you in your time of need, He shows up in the most unpredictable and miraculous ways.

GET REAL WITH YOURSELF

Have you ever wondered if maybe the widow let go of her bitterness about her husband dying and her family having nothing, and that’s why she received the miracle? Is it possible that bitterness or pride about what your needs really are keeps you from experiencing God’s abundance in your life in any way?

Elisha asked the widow, “What do you have in your house?” How does it make you feel to know that God can use even the smallest resource to meet your needs?

Has there been a time when desperation was the doorway to deliverance for you or someone you love? How has grief drawn you closer to God?

GET RENEWED IN PRAYER

HEY JESUS,

Thank You for knowing exactly where I am at in this day, what I have on my mind, and what I need each step of the way. Peace fills my soul when I think about the truth that wherever I go, You are already there. Nothing is a surprise to You. Will You help me bring every need to Your throne? Free me from shame concerning my present struggles and fill me with hope for my future. Show me how to be honest about my situation in a way that invites Your power into my life. Thank You for this story about the widow and the oil—it is hard to fathom such provision, but I know that nothing is too hard for You.

When I feel discouraged by my situation, help me remember Your promises. When I feel the weight of grief heavy on my soul, lift my head and show me how to ask others for help, comfort, and strength. I trust You with my needs.

IN JESUS'S NAME, AMEN.
