Passing the Baton: Part IV

In this series, we’re identifying lessons from Jesus on passing the baton to future leaders. After Jesus selected a core team of twelve, He invested even more intimate time with three of them.

Jesus selected Peter, James, and John for enhanced learning and to be exposed to more miracles than the others. Jesus prepared these three men for greater responsibilities.

Jesus only allowed three disciples to witness Him raising a child from the dead. In Mark 5:37, we read, “He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James.

As you look towards the future of your organization, you need to invest time in a team of people for the broader functionality of your business. But, there should be a smaller group who gain even deeper experience and direction from you.

The primary leadership roles require more in-depth training because those individuals have the responsibility of the entire enterprise on their shoulders. The other employees can focus on specific tasks and projects, but the leadership has to have an understanding of operations, aim for the future direction of the company, and have the skill to lead the business there.

Questions for Reflection

  • Who would be a quality leader for your company? Would your business benefit more from a single leader or a small group of leaders?
  • How is the leadership currently structured in your business? Is it serving your needs well? Would you benefit from reorganizing it?
