Let God Give You The Words To Pray
Paul’s letter to the Romans sheds light on the mysterious movements of the Holy Spirit and the power of prayer. So often, we make our prayer requests with bullet points, numbered lists, and complete sentences. But what about the things that we are afraid to tell God, the things that are stirring deep in our hearts, the things that are incomplete and indescribable under the limits of our language? What about those requests of the soul?
Paul is encouraging us here to pray for the movement of the Spirit in our lives. Not just to cover what we’ve missed in our ordered lists, but to mold us and to shape us to fit the Lord’s will for our lives. By inviting in the presence of the Holy Spirit, we are admitting that we are still human, and that God is still God. He is the Creator and we are the creation.
Any parent knows that when their child asks for something sweet to cure the groaning in their stomach, the best response to satisfy hunger is with food that is substantive and real. Likewise, the Holy Spirit knows what you need. More than just answering our checklists, He wants to provide us with true nourishment and strength.
If your words fail to describe the situation in which you find yourself, ask that His Spirit will speak on your behalf—and that you would simply participate in this holy conversation.
Prayer: Father, open our hearts to let the Holy Spirit in. Bring to light the real needs of our hearts, the real longings of a soul seeking connection with you.
