An Appetite For God
A leading sign of health is appetite. When you visit your doctor for a checkup, expect to be asked, “How is your appetite?” That’s because sick people do not have good appetites. Physical appetite is the natural attribute of a living body, not of a corpse. Likewise, spiritual desire is evidence of a soul made alive to God.
What are your strongest appetites? People who hunger for approval from others will never be satisfied. Appetites for fame and fortune are insatiable. But Jesus said that if we hunger and thirst for the good things He has, we will be filled. Notice which comes first; it is appetite then satisfaction. I do not reach for food unless I am hungry. Appetite precedes action. In the same way, I do not feed my soul unless I have appetite.
Psalm 37:4 contains a marvelous promise: “Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.” That promise, however, has no effect if our hearts are empty of desire. In this case, a lack of desire or appetite leads to receiving little or nothing from God.
There are many good ways to cultivate our relationship with God. One of the first and best is to start by stimulating our hunger and thirst for God and his rule in our life. When we are passionate for those, we can be filled.
Prayer: Father, fill us with a hunger and thirst for you. We surrender our lives to you and invite you to be sovereign in our lives today.
