Becoming a Good Shepherd: Part I

The Bible speaks often about shepherds as a model for leadership, but few people have experienced being a shepherd. As I’ve studied the Bible, I’ve discovered that good shepherd qualities are similar to six qualities identified as a Level 5 Leader in Jim Collins’ classic book, “Good to Great.”

The first quality Mr. Collins mentioned is humility. Collins discovered that many of the great leaders were those who humbly served their staff rather than ruling over them with pride and arrogance. Humble leadership pushes good companies to becoming remarkable ones.

1 Peter 5:2 teaches, “Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve.

The rest of 1 Peter 5 reminds readers that the Lord cherishes humility and extends grace towards the humble. And as people created in his image it only makes sense that a humble attitude is an effective business strategy for leaders. Humility builds trust and respect between leaders and staff.

Becoming a good shepherd begins with being humble as the Lord has asked us to be.

Questions for Reflection

  • What is humility? Who would you describe as humble? What is the strength of humility? How does it make someone a better leader?
  • What does shepherding mean? What is the difference between leading and shepherding? What does shepherding imply that is an expansion from simply leading?
