Proverbs: The Art of Wise Livingनमूना
Introduction by Anna Rask Emison
Proverbs is a poetic book of the Old Testament that invites readers to pause and reflect. It provides wisdom and insight into human experience and our relationships with God and each other. Heeding wisdom’s advice can lead to a smoother life while ignoring it can result in difficulties. Proverbs offers advice, not commands. It provides general observations about life, not promises.
A proverb is a short saying demonstrating likeness or comparison. Biblical proverbs often reverse expectations and provoke surprise and evaluation. They are set in daily life, and context is very important. As you read Proverbs and consider how it applies to your life, it is important to recognize its intended meaning. When used correctly, a proverb effectively makes its point. The book’s ultimate purpose (Proverbs 1:1–7) is to guide believers toward skillful living and discernment.
Proverbs 1–9 highlights wisdom’s value through fatherly instructions, encouraging readers to assume the identity of his son. This section underscores wisdom’s benefits, like avoiding trouble and preventing poverty. Proverbs 1–9 shares that life without boundaries is a disaster, but there is joy and freedom within them.
The remainder of Proverbs covers topics like work, money, family, friendship, and speech. Proverbs 10:1–22:16 contrasts the lives of the righteous and the wicked. The responsibility of understanding these proverbs shifts from the “father” to the readers. As the reader, you are now tasked with cultivating wisdom by testing the validity of each proverb, considering appropriate contexts, and seeing how each proverb fits into the broader picture of your life.
Proverbs 22:17–24:34 are the “words of the wise” in the form of 30 sayings. Proverbs 25–29 are more proverbs of Solomon. Proverbs 30–31 are miscellaneous proverbs by Agur, Lemuel, and a third source writing about a godly woman who cares for her family, serves others, and conducts business.
The Hebrew word hokmah means “wisdom,” but more accurately, “skilled craftsman.” No matter what stage of life you are in, every day gives you a new opportunity to grow and learn. As you build your life, let the book of Proverbs inform, teach, and guide you in the art of wise living.
