The Limitations of Praying for Money

"Lord, please provide the funds I need to pay my bills this month."

Most of us have uttered a similar prayer during financial struggles. Asking God for money is an understandable reaction when financial stress mounts. But this approach has its limitations.

When we pray for money alone, we restrict the ways God may choose to provide.

We also risk overlooking the more profound, non-monetary ways He cares for us.

The temptation to pray for money is strong. Money holds great earthly importance, acting as a means to obtain security, goods, and status (Ecclesiastes 10:19).

And when finances dwindle, it’s easy to equate money with provision itself.

Oh, but God is so much bigger than that, friend!

According to the Bible, God can provide in countless ways beyond money:

"And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:19)

"The young lions suffer want and hunger, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing." (Psalm 34:10)

The truth is that God is never limited by human constraints like money. His provision extends far beyond any earthly resource. When we pray solely for money, we essentially put Him in a box of our own design, bounded by our limited perspectives.

This restrictive tendency also causes us to overlook the more profound, non-monetary ways God cares for us. Answered prayers often come through unexpected means and teach us to rely more fully on Him. They strengthen our faith that God will provide, regardless of the earthly medium.

And we must not forget that the Bible has many examples of miraculous, non-monetary provision. God sustained the Israelites with manna and quail in the desert for 40 years (Exodus 16). He caused the widow's oil to multiply to pay off debt (2 Kings 4:1-7). And Jesus fed thousands from a few loaves and fish (Matthew 14:13-21), just to name a few.

In praying narrowly for money, we risk being blinded to the diverse workings of God’s power and provision.

Put simply, we impose limits on our limitless God.

In the following parts of this series, we’ll explore how to pray more broadly and foster greater trust in God’s care.

See you on Day 2.
