Year of the Bible: Part Eleven of Twelve

DAY 16 OF 30

Ask for Wisdom

The book of James was written by Jesus’s brother. This book is a bit disjointed and does not follow a precise outline. Much like the book of Proverbs, we see wisdom pouring out and can glean a lot of practicality from the book. James’s wisdom is based on his experience of learning directly from Jesus.

At the beginning, James encourages the Jewish believers scattered throughout the Roman empire. He challenges them to stand firm when their faith is tested. Each believer attempting to live out their faith in the surrounding culture faced opportunities to compromise. James recognized that the believers’ faith would be challenged. Sometimes, they were tested and tempted to waiver in their beliefs. David Pawson helps us define the difference between testing and temptation. You only test someone hoping they will pass. Temptation means hoping you will fail. So, God will sometimes allow us to be tested to demonstrate the strength of our character. However, the enemy will tempt you, hoping to get you to fall. Then, he can heap condemnation and doubt on you regarding your true allegiance.

With that in mind, we can rejoice when our faith is tested because it will show us where we need God. Likewise, when we are tempted, we can stand firm, knowing that all we need to do is ask God for wisdom.

Some wisdom comes from human experience and the school of hard knocks, but Godly wisdom comes from simply asking God to give it to us. So, whether we are being tested or tempted, we can ask God for wisdom, and He will give it to us. We demonstrate reliance and faith when we ask God to lead us in wisdom.

Question: Are you facing tests or temptation today?

Prayer: Ask God for the wisdom to face today’s circumstances. Take time to note how He responds, and think about what might have happened if you hadn’t asked for His input!
