Our culture’s narratives about sexual and gender identity are persuasive. The messages to “follow your heart” and “live your truth” are so deeply ingrained that questioning or denying your desires can feel wrong.

But when we feel tempted or confused, we can choose to trust God over our own impulses. Every time you say “no” to sin and “yes” to God, as hard as it is, you can trust that your sacrifice is worth it. God isn’t holding out on you or punishing you; he’s promising a deeper joy and satisfaction in surrendering to him than you would have by satisfying yourself. God sees all your efforts and your desire to be faithful to him. He offers forgiveness when you sin and gives you his Spirit to empower you on the journey.

God also uses fellow believers to encourage and support us when we face temptation. Together, we hold each other accountable and remind each other of God’s love and mercy. When we belong to a faithful community of believers, we become more aware of God’s mercy in our lives and are quick to show mercy to others who struggle.

• What are some practical ways we can stay motivated to please God even when we feel tempted or tired of doing good?
• What role can the Christian community play in the battle against sin? Have you ever been encouraged and “built up” by fellow Christians? In what ways might God be calling you to build others up and encourage others?
• Do you struggle to show mercy to others? What about yourself? How can remembering God’s mercy in your life help you in dealing with others in a loving way?
