God Who Empowers

Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.

1 Corinthians 12:3-6 (ESV)

In this letter to the Corinth church, Paul is writing to teach them on many issues of the church, including spiritual gifts. There were manifestations of the spirit in the Corinth church, and Paul wanted them to test it and make sure it was from the Holy Spirit, not a deceiving spirit. These gifts are special God-given abilities meant to honour Christ and build up others in the church. It’s to show the grace and power of the Spirit among His people in their public gatherings, homes, families, and individual lives. It makes preaching the good news about Jesus effective by confirming the message with supernatural signs and miracles. We are to work together in the unity of the body of Christ; no one is more superior than another. In chapter 13, Paul also ensures that love is the motivation for exercising the spiritual gifts, so the church does not get proud and boastful or fall into idolatry.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, You are the good God that gives good gifts. These spiritual gifts of wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discernment of spirits, tongues, and interpretation of tongues are given to us for Your Kingdom's purposes. We want to receive them and use them wisely. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
