Advent: The Road to Peace

Bring Him your treasures 📿

The Advent season is all about preparing for the return of King Jesus. We have all been called to be like the wise virgins. “‘At midnight the cry rang out: “Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!” Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, “Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.” But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.’” (Matthew 25:6-8,10)

Are you ready for the return of Christ?

The Bible tells us that His return will be unexpected: “‘Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.’” (Matthew 25:13, NIV)

I’m very aware of His return. Whether He comes today or in a hundred years, we all know He’s coming back for the believers and to judge the rest of the world.

That’s a pretty heavy reality, but it’s true. Let’s make sure that we are ready.

The second theme that’s so important during Advent is giving gifts to others. My wife spends weeks and months preparing for our grown children, their spouses, and our 12 grandchildren. Many more are included in our French Canadian traditions of overeating and gift giving. We call these festivities the “Réveillon.” In English, it would be called the “awakening.”

Traditionally, Christmas Eve would start with midnight mass, then the opening of presents, and then a marvelous feast. It was the only night of the year when we could stay up all night. As children, we loved it. What are your Christmas traditions?

These two themes can’t help but come together in a very meaningful third tradition: giving to the poor, hungry, lost, and lonely. Every year, my wife and I give to others who are less fortunate because Jesus said, “‘The King will reply, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”’” (Matthew 25:40, NIV)

I believe “Giving is living.” Jesus also said it’s more blessed to give than to receive: “...the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” (Acts 20:35, NIV)

So, could you be like the wise of old? Give to others and so fulfill the mandate of giving to God.

Because you’re a miracle.

Paul Marc Goulet
