Mark: Living the Way of Jesus in the Worldनमूना
First Thought
A teaching opportunity for Jesus arose around divorce, for the grounds for divorce were robustly debated. Followers of Rabbi Hillel argued that a man could divorce his wife just because she displeased him. Followers of Rabbi Shammai argued that a man could divorce his wife only for a serious transgression, such as sexual misconduct. Jesus is being tested - which camp does He support? In response, He takes them back to God’s intent for marriage: a lifelong call to fidelity between a man and a woman. The law permitted a man to divorce his wife, but it was a concession to allow for the hardness of human hearts. The woman was given a certificate of divorce to protect her legal rights and to prevent divorce from becoming an instrument of male power over women. Jesus is unambiguous about the very serious responsibilities that marriage entails - both ways. God’s grace is abundant just as His loving invitation to be transformed is fierce.
