Mark: Living the Way of Jesus in the World

DAY 17 OF 40

First Thought

The healing of the blind man at Bethsaida is paralleled by a second healing of a blind man, Bartimaeus, later in chapter 10. Together they act as bookends around Jesus’ teaching on the cross and discipleship as He starts to make His way to Jerusalem and the climax of the story. This healing of an unnamed blind man is unusual in the Gospels as it’s a healing accomplished in two stages. The two-part healing of the blind man resonates with how the disciples are coming to grasp the full wonder of Jesus and the kingdom of God. Right now, as Jesus had noted, His disciples fail to ‘see’ what was happening. They see only in part. It will be a while before they will ‘see fully’ and grasp the implications of all that Jesus is living out in their sight. One day, though, they will. It will require the revelatory work of God through His Spirit.
