Love God Greatly: David

DAY 30 OF 54

SOAP: 2 Samuel 1:26 Jonathan and Saul are killed in battle, and David is overcome with grief at the loss of his dearest friend. The friendship between David and Jonathan was a source of strength in David’s life – which even surpassed his experience with matrimonial love. Although their dreams for a future partnership would never happen, the friendship they forged was a greater gift from God that will live on in eternity. The passing of a friend who has supported us and given generously of themselves is an incredibly painful loss. David honored Jonathan’s legacy by remembering his friend, serving his family, and continuing to move forward in faith. Like David, we do not grieve without hope. One day, we will see our faithful friends again in glory. If you’ve lost a friend, ask God to comfort you in your grief and show you how to continue to honor their lives with the choices you are making. What if David had not accepted Jonathan’s gift of friendship? That would have been an even greater loss. This unlikely friendship should never have happened really, but these two faith-filled men chose to see each other with spiritual eyes. Is there a competitor in your life that you need to turn into a friend? Maybe that person is your Jonathan. Maybe God wants you to extend the hand of friendship to someone out of the ordinary. Lord, thank You for extending the hand of friendship to us. Help us to not miss out on our Jonathan. Give us your perspective on friendship and help us to honor one another until the end. Amen.
