Love God Greatly: In the Beginningनमूना

Love God Greatly: In the Beginning

DAY 36 OF 42

As Noah’s family repopulated the earth, some people followed God while some turned from Him. Nimrod was a mighty hunter who ruled a large kingdom. He built the city of Nineveh, a city in the Assyrian Empire that was known for violence and wickedness. The prophet Jonah traveled to Nineveh, preaching God’s message. Jonah was reluctant to go to Nineveh and tell the people to repent, not because he was afraid for his life, but because he feared God’s compassion. Jonah hated the Ninevites and wanted God to completely and utterly destroy them, not show them compassion.

The people of Nineveh turned (though only for a time) from their wickedness. God relented from His planned destruction and did not bring judgment on the city. His compassion astounded the people of Nineveh, but Jonah was not surprised. Jonah wanted to see his enemy destroyed and he was (at least initially) upset by God’s compassion.

Years later, the city of Nineveh had turned back to their wicked ways. The prophet Nahum spoke of God’s promised destruction on the city of Nineveh for their blatant rebellion against God and their wickedness toward God’s people. God destroyed the city of Nineveh and the rest of the Assyrians with it.

The legacy of the city of Nineveh reminds us of the vastness of God’s character. He is in control and His actions may be beyond our understanding. Whether He chooses to show grace to the wicked or to enact vengeance, His character remains the same. His goodness and holiness are displayed through His work whether we believe it fits our own interests or not. But we can trust Him. He created the earth, He chose and selected each person and the time and place for them to live. He has a plan and purpose, and we can trust His character.

Prayer:

Lord God, help me trust Your character. I believe You are good, not only to me, but to all You have made. I know I can trust Your actions even if I do not understand them. Help me believe You are always working for Your glory and my good, and help me to rest in Your matchless kindness, compassion, and love. Amen.

About this Plan

Love God Greatly: In the Beginning

In this Bible study, we’ll explore the first eleven chapters of Genesis, discovering the beginnings of creation, sin, grace, redemption, and promise. We can learn to love God greatly by studying His character, especially the aspects that are challenging and raise more questions in our faith. May we be expectant that He will reveal Himself to us in new ways as we seek Him.
