Leading Things You Didn’t Start

Look at That Fruit

When you step into leading something you didn’t start, you will be forced to pull from parts of your wiring, skills, and experiences to be successful. I believe the scripture teaches us an invaluable principle for such a time.

So often, leadership content tends to make simple principles complex. My prayer is that we can make complex things simple. As you are new to an existing team or stepping into lead something you didn’t start, staying crazy simple will serve you well in the early days. It will actually serve you well all your days leading.

Matthew 7 talks about how we can recognize good trees. Simple. Good fruit. Bad trees? Bad fruit. Leadership is absolutely the same.

Bad leadership = Bad fruit.

Good leadership = Good fruit.

The Apostle Paul gives us a powerful understanding that allows us to draw strength and guidance from the Holy Spirit in moments of leadership. Paul describes nine fruits of the Spirit that when displayed, can be a game-changer for leadership. I would argue that if you or someone new to your team would display even just a few of the fruits of the Spirit stepping into a situation like this, you will be well on your way to a successful leadership transition.

As you read today in Galatians 5, pray that God would show you the fruits of the Spirit that would create influence in the new leadership opportunity. All of the fruits will, but what are one or two that could make an instant impact in the new space?

What if you were able to keep your first ninety days simple by focusing on bearing the fruits of the Spirit? Pick one or two fruits of the Spirit and pray that God would help you show those through your leadership today.
