The Biblical View of Money

We all have experienced that long-awaited raise, only to wonder what happened to it after we had paid the bills. Money always seems to be in short supply when it is the ultimate thing for which we long.

As Satan seeks to seduce you and me into following after the god of money, he will work hard to keep us from aligning our view of money with God’s. So it is crucial for you and me to understand how God views money. Solomon’s wise words in Ecclesiastes 5:19 are a good starting point:

Moreover, when God gives any man wealth and possessions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work – this is a gift of God.

However, Solomon also makes clear that the person whose life is driven by money will never be satisfied. He writes in Ecclesiastes 5:10, “Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless.

Jesus also deals directly with the futility of a life driven by accumulating wealth in Matthew 6:19-21. Read carefully what He says:

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

We will accumulate the stuff we treasure. The only question is where. If we hoard our money and accumulate the stuff of earth, it is temporary. If we invest our money in Kingdom efforts and accumulate the stuff of heaven, it is permanent and eternal. When that is our focus, God will have our whole heart, which is what He treasures!
