Day 5: The Church in Sardis

The church in Sardis was known for its luxury. It was stationed between some popular trade routes and had its fair share of visitors. But along with its wealth came a lack of conviction. Sardis was known as a place where any kind of immorality was accepted. Sardis never took a stand on what was right and what was wrong. Anything goes! Slowly but surely, the church in Sardis started to look like the culture. They never took a stand against immorality, and Jesus called them out for it.

GET RIGHT: Deadness

The church of Sardis had a reputation of being alive, but they were dead. They had lost everything that made them different from the world around them. The city of Sardis and the church of Sardis were almost indistinguishable. The life of the church had been sucked out. Jesus calls them to repent and turn back to Him because He is coming at a time they do not know. We all must assess our lives and discern how we have begun to look too much like the world around us.

Question for Reflection: In what ways should a Christian’s life be different?

GET READY: Hope

Jesus says that there is still hope for the church in Sardis. Even though they are dead, Jesus is known for bringing dead things back to life! There were still a few people in the church who hadn’t compromised. They have held fast to the truth! Is that you? Are you committed to Jesus in every area of your life? If you are, Jesus promises to cloth you in white. White represents purity and cleansing. Jesus will cleanse us and make us pure when we completely surrender to Him! The question is: Do you want to be cleansed?

Question for Reflection: What kind of person do you want to be? Do you want to completely surrender to Jesus?
