Quiet Watersनमूना
You prepare a table before me, in the presence of my enemies. (Psalm 23:5a)
Solidarity in suffering
What kind of future awaits three childless widows with no male protector to sustain them (Ruth 1:6-13)? We can imagine their suffering after encountering so many losses, so much more even for Naomi! We observe however that Ruth, expressing a deep love (hesed) and solidarity for Naomi, decides to stand by her in a desperate situation (Ruth 1:14-18). She is willing to become a stranger in the foreign land of Israel and to serve a foreign God. Expressing solidarity always implies sacrifices.
- The women are able to find some food, thanks to the social assistance program in force in ancient Israel (Leviticus 19:9-10). What does it request from harvesters (vs. 2:2-3,7)?
- Why does the rich owner, Boaz, do more than is required (vs. 2:15-16)?
- Reflect on Boaz’s action to Ruth (see vs. 4:1-11). In what ways can you—individually or as a family—contribute within your means and ‘prepare a table’ (Psalm 23:5a) for the needy and those affected by different needs during this COVID-19 period?
With this pandemic—where social lives are being disrupted—an increasing risk of selfishness exists. We note however, what God did through one poor, foreign, hardworking, and self-sacrificing woman who took refuge under His wings. Ruth could never imagine what her exceptional act of solidarity did to the community at large! (vs. 4:13-18; Matthew 1:5,17; Obed was the grandfather of king David, the forefather of Jesus). The Lord can use you, too. Our loving Shepherd carries us through even the toughest of times.
Family activity
As a family, identify one person or family and intentionally go out of your way to practically demonstrate solidarity, generosity, and kindness towards them—in a way that can contribute to creating a hopeful and peaceful future for them.
