One of my favorite examples of Romans 4:17 involves the young man who does my nails. When I went to his shop for the first time, he handed me a business card. Along with the contact information, the card read, “Come happy. Leave Happier.” I thought that was a catchy slogan, but I soon learned it was much more.

The first time I went, he must have told me five times: “We make our clients happy,” and “No one leaves here unhappy with their nails.” As he worked he looked me in the eye and said, “You will be happy with the job I do on your nails.” He said it to the other nail techs and to other clients who were having their nails done. 

That young man has figured out the power in his words! Since he opened his shop, he has been calling for what he wants, and guess what he now has? Happy clients! I know several women who go there, and all of them are very happy with their nails.

I believe his words inspire him and his other techs to do a good job every day, and they inspire his clients to be happy. I’ve been to a lot of nail salons in my day, but I’ve never seen one so full of happy clients. We really can have what we say!

According to Proverbs 18:21, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Meaning, you will “eat the fruit,” or, see the results, of what you’ve been saying. That verse is talking about your tongue. Speaking death (doubt) or speaking life (faith) is in the power of your tongue, not anyone else’s. No one else is going to do this for you. It’s up to you to speak words that agree with God’s Word.

But that means you can choose! You’re not a victim, and no one can stop this power from working in your life. You can choose to speak words of death and doubt that agree with your circumstance, or you can speak words of life and faith that agree with the Bible.
