“Finally Home”

Longing for heaven is a natural part of being human. The feeling is magnified when we lose someone we love or when we find ourselves alone, wanting answers to problems we just can’t seem to solve in our own strength. But what if we began to think about heaven as more than simply wishful thinking? What if we looked at it as a beginning rather than an ending, a celebration rather than a resting place? Maybe we’d actually start to anticipate it more than ache for it.

I will be forever running free / Moving to all heaven’s melodies / Colors that I’ve never seen / Bigger than my wildest dreams / We’ll be together / When I’m finally home

Heaven will finally right everything about this world that is upside down. We will find completeness in the very person of Christ as He stands before us. The Bible says the streets will be paved with gold, the walls of the city will be adorned with precious jewels and the gates will be made of pearl. But it will be the light radiating from Christ that will be the most stunning.

Revelation 21:23 (KJV) says, “And the city has no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.”

While the Bible merely hints at the grandness of heaven, there are a lot of unknowns about what it will actually look and feel like. We know what won’t be there: pain, suffering, tears, sickness. However, we often forget about what will be there: joy, singing, laughter, dancing. Sounds like the ingredients of a party—an all-out celebration! As we are finally released from all of the chains that hold us back in our earthly world, we will be free to forever do what we were created to do—give glory and honor to Jesus all the days of our life.

And the best part? The Host of the party will be there. We can only dream of what heaven will really be like, but once we get there, it won’t be our surroundings that will impress us most. It will be our King whose glory will capture us immediately. His presence is heaven, and that’s all we need to know.
