Soaking It All In

“They want to know what they are capable of, how far they can push things. They want to know how to abandon the fear that keeps them from trying to achieve something great. They want to know how to believe they can become someone great.” Roger Thompson, We Stood Upon Stars

Kids are like those crazy towels for sale on late-night television that will soak up, like, gallons of any liquid. They will take in just about anything around them. They have more questions than a trivia game, and most of those are never even said out loud.

Think about it like this. When you were a child, how’d you figure out how to talk and walk? Did you ask someone, or did you just watch how others did it? How about dating, conversation, and mowing a lawn. Did you ask or just learn by soaking up the examples of others?

This is probably one reason Jesus ignored the attention of a huge crowd to focus on a couple of kids. He must have known they’d be learning from His actions even more than His words. When we give time to kids, their minds are soaking up answers to questions like: Am I loved? Do I matter? Am I worth it? Does anyone else care about what I care about?

So, if you’re worried you don’t have all the right answers, or you’re not cool enough, or you yourself never had great parents—just start by giving your undivided time. If you do, they’ll soak it right up.

Watch today’s video, and then consider the question below.

Consider: In today’s video, Roger talks about finding a way to “roll in” and gain momentum as a great father or mentor. What could be a “roll in” opportunity for you?
