Light

Among fire’s many functions and purposes, its ability to give light is one of the most notable. One flickering flame can light up an entire room. So when Jesus says that we are the light of not just a room, a hallway, or a house but the entire world, He points to the idea that our presence should have a massive impact on our environment.

Jesus’ statement teaches us two truths:

Purpose - Our chief goal is to live in a way that illuminates who Jesus is.

Identity - We are the light of the world simply because of our connection to Jesus (see John 8:12, 9:5). Who we are is not defined by what friends, family or culture says, but our relationship with God.

As the light of the world, Jesus says our natural outpouring will be good works — not for our own glory, accolades, or recognition, but for God’s, and His alone.

Sometimes, we think it’s the good works that will keep us passionate about God. We think that if we could just find out what God wants us to do, what ministry he wants us to serve on, or what soup kitchen to volunteer in, that will be enough to keep the embers of our faith burning strong. Often times, this isn’t the case.

The fuel behind a vibrant walk with God isn’t “doing.” It’s “being.” It’s being in an intimate, continual relationship with God that teaches you who He is, who you are and why you’re here. It’s being confident, knowing your purpose and identity are secure in Christ. It’s being at rest, knowing your loving Father’s got everything under control. All this sets the stage for you to spend the rest of your days using the fullness of who you are to shine bright for the glory of God.
