The Life That Counts

What is God’s will for my life? This is a common question Christians ask as they grapple with thousands of big and small decisions, most of which don’t have specific, biblical answers. The great news is that we don’t have to find God’s will because it isn’t lost. God has revealed in his Word that his will is for you to enjoy him in all his glory and exalt him among all nations, all by the power of the Holy Spirit who makes you more and more like Jesus every day.

Let’s take a look at how God uniquely calls individuals to experience his will in creative, beautiful, and unimaginable ways.

Calling

In Acts 13:1–3, the Holy Spirit calls out Barnabas and Saul for a clear purpose. Based on this and other passages of Scriptures, we can recognize four aspects of God’s calling in our lives.

  1. God’s Call to Salvation: First and foremost, God draws people into a relationship with him through faith in Jesus.
  2. God’s Call to Mission: Every person who has come to saving faith in Jesus is called to mission (Matthew 4:19). Regardless of their circumstances, every Christian is called to love others and lead others to Jesus.
  3. God’s Call to Station: Each of us occupies specific roles or positions in God’s purposes. Our church membership, vocation, marital status, and national citizenship are all examples.
  4. God’s Call to Service: In Acts 13 we read that not every believer in the church at Antioch was called to leave for mission. Yet each person had a role to play. God appoints different people to do a diversity of tasks that all advance his mission in different ways.

The Creativity of God

It’s staggering to contemplate the creativity of God’s calling. No matter your age or stage of life, your citizenship, your marital status, your job, your gifting, or where you live, you’re an instrument in God’s hands to serve a singular purpose: to enjoy and exalt God.

Just think about how teachers, medical professionals, business leaders, and so many others can each contribute to discipleship in their spheres of influence, even in red zones across the globe. God may call some to reach these red zones directly, while others are called to support mission efforts from green zones. The Holy Spirit empowers our every act of service that contributes to making disciples of nations.

So, how are you going to live for what matters most? How will you continue to know God and make him known? May you enjoy diving into prayer, fasting, and meditation on God’s Word as you seek to deepen your enjoyment of him, expressing gratitude for his goodness and provision. May you recognize your role in making disciples wherever you are, looking for opportunities to talk about Jesus in your family, work, or community. In the face of an enemy seeking to derail your life, resolve to live and die for this purpose. Embrace this purpose as the way to experience abundant life. And imagine the day when, by God’s grace, you’ll stand before his throne, united with people from every nation, tribe, and language, enjoying and exalting God for all eternity.
