Our God Will See Us Through

DAY 9 OF 10

NO OTHER KING

By Lauren Lee Anderson

When I was growing up, my grandfather was the pastor of our church. I often heard him talk about how we all have a temptation to serve what he called “little kings.” He’d remind us that we were created to worship and serve something, but that when our priorities are out of whack, we might find ourselves serving money, status, comfort, relationships, dreams, or any number of other things.

There have been seasons of my life when I have served “little kings.” And the thing is, these “little kings” can be sneaky… Not all the things we’re drawn to are bad in and of themselves. We need money to survive; relationships bring beauty and depth to our lives; and dreams push us forward.

But these things make horrible rulers. They are always looking to be served and rarely serve us back in a truly life-giving way.

That’s the most remarkable thing about Jesus as our true King. Of all the things that may beckon our affection, he is most deserving.

No other king knelt to wash feet.

No other king laid down his power in order to be murdered with thieves.

No other king stands with arms wide open to the whole world.

He is the humble ruler who came not to be served, but to serve. He is endlessly worthy of our lives, our time, and our devotion.

And yet he does not ask for those things without having given them first. There is no king that compares to Jesus.

Spend some time this week thinking about your life and what things can easily become “little kings.” What can you do this week to let go of those things and put your hope and trust solely in Jesus the true King?

About this Plan

Our God Will See Us Through

What does it really mean to worship God? It can be tempting to view worship simply as the songs we sing on Sunday. But that can’t be our only response to a gracious God who passionately pursues us, time and time again. In this reading plan, Lauren Lee Anderson and Clay Finnesand share reflections behind the lyrics of the latest North Point Worship album, Our God Will See Us Through.
