Jesus brings light to dark places and dark moments.

All throughout the Bible we find light associated with the nature of God. Indeed, God is a beacon of hope piercing the night, sparkling on the dark horizon as we pitch and yaw through stormy waters.

We need light because we all go through the dark night of the soul at some point. Job knew this well. He uses an interesting metaphor in Job 18:6 where he says the light in their tent will grow dark.

I recently went camping with my 8-year-old son – yes, in a tent! Let’s just say I am not an experienced camper. The air-mattress half deflated during the night. A mosquito got trapped inside. Not to mention it is dark. Job says life without God is literally like being in a shadowy tent with no lamp.

Ultimately, all of humanity is in a tent with no light. We are lost. Broken. Separated by God. We are fumbling and tripping over.

But in Johns Gospel we read that Jesus is our light and our salvation. John paints the world in the starkly contrasting imagery of darkness and light. In John 1:5 he writes that the light shines in the darkness. In John 8:12 he then recounts the words of Jesus – “I am the light of the world”.

I want to reverberate those words to the very core of your soul. Jesus is our light in the darkness. He is the lamp to the tent of all of humanity.

So, if you are in the darkness of disappointment. Pain. Stress. Perhaps you feel utterly hopeless. Know this – there is a light that pierces every shadow. Jesus can illuminate your soul right now.
