Managing Relationships with Each Other

Do not have two differing weights in your bag – one heavy, one light… You must have accurate and honest weights and measures, so that you may lie long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. For the Lord your God detests anyone who does these things, anyone who deals dishonestly. 

Deuteronomy 25:13, 15-16 (NIV)

Moses continued to write about the rules to the Israelites, especially in dealing with people around them, e.g. people from other tribes, slaves, hired men, brothers, neighbors, spouses, and even what a brother should do with a widowed sister-in-law. Here, Moses set out the clear instructions from God, so that there is good law and order for people to follow. These chosen verses are like a reminder to us. Even though they form a guideline on their own, literally, but as we finish reading these 3 chapters of more rules, 25:13-16 remind us we shall also measure ourselves accurately and honestly against God’s benchmarks and we shall do everything in response to God love. Jesus said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15). 

Prayer:

Father God, sometimes it is too easy for us to judge and find fault in others when we do not see and fix our own faults and be obedient to You. Let us be more sensitive to You and Your people, to always apply Your kindness and love, and not to favor ourselves at the expense of disadvantaging others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
