Mentor and Student are Separated

“… Suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind. Elisha saw this and cried out, ‘My father! My father! The chariots and horsemen of Israel!’ And Elisha saw him no more.” (2 Kings 2:11-12)

After some years of close companionship, the time had come for Elijah to leave. His task on earth was done. Both prophets were aware of this fact, but they did not know the details of God’s plans.

Elijah asked his student, “What can I do for you before I am taken from you?” Elisha asked for “a double portion of your spirit”, referring to the double inheritance that belonged to a firstborn son. He really wanted to be a worthy successor to his mentor! However, Elijah could not grant this request. It is up to God to distribute gifts of the Holy Spirit according to His will (Hebrews 2:4).

When Elijah and Elisha were walking together, suddenly Elijah was taken up to heaven in a chariot of fire. Elijah's cloak fell as a sign to Elisha that his request was granted and that he had received the same calling and authority as his mentor had possessed.

When you have been in close company with someone for a long time (as a parent with your child, as a pastor with the youth in your church, or as old friends…) it is difficult to let go of one another. Especially since you can’t give the other person what they need most: God’s Holy Spirit. Do you trust God enough to leave your loved ones in His hands?
