Joseph's Life Story

God has everything in His hands

After Joseph dreaming about his future and the baker and cupbearer dreaming about their fate, now it’s Pharaoh’s turn. He has two dreams, one about cows and the other about grain. But actually, the two dreams are the same, and through them God shows that there will first be seven years of plenty and then seven years of famine. But again, nobody is able to interpret the dreams! Finally, the cupbearer thinks of Joseph who had shown a special ability to interpret dreams. Joseph is called out of prison and Pharaoh tells him: “I have had a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.” Joseph answers Pharaoh, “It is not in me; God will give Pharaoh a favorable answer.”

This story makes very clear that God is above everything. He gave Pharaoh these dreams, and nobody but God’s servant Joseph could interpret them. The same happened centuries later in Babylon, where again a king dreamed about the future, and nobody but God’s servant Daniel could make known the dream and its interpretation. These kings had many priests, sorcerers and magicians at their disposal, but only the true God could reveal the future. Even king Nebuchadnezzar had to acknowledge that Daniel’s God was “God of gods and Lord of kings”.

Pharaoh’s dreams about the seven years of plenty and the seven years of famine came true. This not only shows that God knows everything before it happens, but also that He governs the whole world, including natural disasters, rain, sunshine, and so on. Even mighty kings and empires are dependent on Him.

Do you honor God by acknowledging that He has the whole world in His hands?

Joseph's Life Story

“God loves you, and He has a plan for your life.” This is a popular statement among Christians, and it is true. But God’s ways are not always easy! They may include suffering to transform us; we may go through deep valleys before reaching the heights of God’s promises. Joseph’s life story, as recorded in the book of Genesis, is a good example of this.
