Where Is Your Trust?

Where do you put your trust? As Christians, it’s natural for us to say that we trust God. We have T-shirts, mugs, magnets, and bumper stickers that emphasize this declaration. But if we really examine ourselves, we’ll often see that we are a little too influenced by the world around us.

Our culture tells us to trust many things—none of which are God. We’re told to trust in our bank accounts, our retirement, our politicians, our degrees, and our abilities. And we often do, even if we don’t like to admit it. We get anxious when unexpected expenses deplete our savings and when Social Security doesn’t seem so secure anymore. We feel doom when the “other guy” wins the election. We get frustrated and discouraged when our aging body seems to turn against us.

So, what do we trust in for our meaning and value and security? We may not consider these other things to be idols, but if they’re taking the place of God in our lives, we need to evaluate where our confidence lies. As the psalmist declared, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God” (Psalm 20:7). Are you trusting in the Lord during good times and bad? Just like with these chariots and horses, it is easy to fall into the trap of trusting in the physical things on earth that seem so dependable. However, David also said in Psalm 56, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in [God]. …What can mere mortals do to me?” (v. 3-4). He knew that if his trust was in God, everything would ultimately be okay. So I ask again, where do you put your trust?

God, thank You for being trustworthy. Help me to fully trust You as I go through my day.
