DAY 5 OF 5

Scoring Points

In basketball, scoring points is essential to winning the game. Every player dreams of being a "bucket getter," and almost every hooper has imagined taking the game-winning shot with the clock running down. There are countless hoop dreams and scenarios that could play out, but as a Christian athlete, your dreams should extend beyond yourself. When you discover your God-given purpose, it drives you with a passion for Jesus and the work He has called you to do.

One might ask, “What is that work?” As followers of Christ, we are called to share the message of salvation and make disciples of all nations. Matthew 28:19-20 makes this clear: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” We are called to live on mission, actively spreading the gospel and building God’s kingdom.

In this mission, we can ”score points for the kingdom” by being generous with our time, treasure, and talent—the ultimate triple threat.

  • Time: Making disciples starts with building genuine relationships. Investing your time means being intentional about connecting with others, sharing life, and pointing them to Jesus. This might look like spending time with a teammate, offering encouragement, or simply being present for someone in need. Your time becomes a powerful tool for fostering trust and opening doors to share the gospel.
  • Treasure: Generosity also extends to your financial resources. Meeting practical needs is a tangible way to show Christ’s love. Whether it’s treating someone to dinner, helping with a teammate’s expenses, or supporting a cause, your treasure can be a reflection of God’s provision. These acts of generosity pave the way for deeper conversations about faith and salvation.
  • Talent: As an athlete, you’ve been given unique skills and experiences. Sharing your knowledge about the game—whether by mentoring aspiring players, coaching younger athletes, or inspiring teammates—can be a powerful way to disciple others. Use your platform and expertise to model Christlike humility and excellence, showing others how faith and purpose can shape every aspect of life.

Each time you engage with someone through your time, treasure, or talent, you’re scoring a “point” for the kingdom. Consider how you can actively live out your faith, both on and off the court, through your words, actions, and relationships. Every opportunity to share the love of Christ is another step toward fulfilling the Great Commission and leaving an eternal impact.

One thing to remember is that verse 20 assures us, “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” It’s like God is saying, “For real, for real, I’ve got you.” No matter where you go or what challenges you face in making disciples, you’re never alone.

Reflection:

  • How are you using your time, treasure, and talent to “score points” for God’s kingdom?
  • Think of someone in your life who may benefit from hearing about Jesus. What intentional steps can you take to build a relationship with them?
  • Are your personal goals aligned with God’s purpose for your life? How can you shift your focus to build His kingdom?

Conclusion:

As we conclude this devotional, let the lessons of basketball inspire your faith journey. Inclusivity, teamwork, guiding principles, and scoring points remind us that every moment—on and off the court—is an opportunity to reflect Christ’s love and fulfill the Great Commission.

Discipleship doesn’t end with the game; it’s a lifelong mission. Live with purpose, rooted in Scripture, and confident in God’s presence. Let your actions and words inspire others to follow Christ, turning every interaction into a step toward building His kingdom.

Remember, the ultimate Coach is with you, guiding and empowering you to make an eternal impact. Step boldly into the mission, letting your life be a testament to His love and grace.
