94x50: Discipleship on the Court

DAY 1 OF 5

A Sacred Court

In December 1891, the game of basketball emerged from the visionary mind of Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian physical education instructor and Presbyterian minister. Faced with the challenge of keeping his students at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, active indoors during winter, Naismith created a game that reflected his Christian values of teamwork, fairness, and physical activity. His mission was clear—“to win men for the Master.”

Naismith’s vision for basketball extended beyond mere sport. It aligned with the call in Matthew 28:19 to make disciples of all nations and echoed the principle in 1 Corinthians 10:31—to glorify God in all we do. The 94x50 basketball court, with its defined boundaries and universal appeal, transforms into more than a competitive space. It becomes a sacred arena for teaching and living out lessons of faith, character, and discipleship.

Every dribble, pass, and shot carries the potential for spiritual growth and fellowship. Whether encouraging a teammate, showing humility in victory, or learning resilience in defeat, the court offers endless opportunities to reflect Christ’s love and mission.

As Naismith envisioned, basketball reminds us that every environment—whether a court, classroom, or workplace—can be a place to glorify God and make disciples. Through our actions, words, and relationships, we turn ordinary spaces into sacred ones.

Reflection:

  • How can you glorify God in your daily activities, even in something as simple as playing a sport or working?
  • What steps can you take to actively make disciples in your everyday environments?
  • The foundation of basketball was rooted in evangelism and discipleship. How are you staying true to that vision, and how do you think the game has evolved from those roots?

About this Plan

94x50: Discipleship on the Court

Welcome to 94x50: Discipleship on the Court, a five-part devotional series exploring the connection between basketball and the call to make disciples. Like basketball, discipleship requires teamwork, skill development, and adherence to principles. The court transforms into a space for spiritual growth and fellowship, where players grow in faith and character. This series highlights how the fundamentals of basketball mirror key aspects of the Christian walk. Join us as we delve into these powerful parallels and discover how the game we love can inspire us to live out our faith.
