Someone Else's World

DAY 15 OF 20

"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28 ESV

Scripture provides three divinely powerful tools for combating the anxiety of lack. We could spend a lifetime meditating on these Truths, but let's at least touch the surface to get us thinking about them.

  • Thanksgiving: In Philippians 4, the Apostle Paul discusses combating a spirit of anxiety with a "return to reasonableness." This isn't just a gratitude journal listing all the wonderful ways God has blessed us (although it can certainly include that). Returning to reasonableness is remembering who God is. When we remember the hierarchy of creation and that God Himself is above it all, suddenly, everything falls into place.

A heart of thanksgiving, realizing who God is and what He has done for us, has the power to guard our hearts in Christ Jesus.

  • Sabbath: Resting is certainly not fun in our hurried culture, but like always, Jesus is onto something. Whether it's a literal 24-hour day or not, we tend to get hung up on this part of the Sabbath. There's good theology to claim one way or another; don't miss the heart behind what Jesus wants for us.

God designed us to take a break (physically, emotionally, and spiritually) to reset and rest. This isn't intended to be a time to binge-watch your favorite show but rather an allowance to commune with God fully. Slow down or pause everything else in life to reconnect with your Savior genuinely. This blends nicely into the third tool.

  • Christ's sacrifice: Everything shifts when we realize that Christ is our daily bread. Our Savior and Lord are what we need to get through every day. When we zoom out on all of our struggles, lists, needs, hopes, etc., and zoom in on the Cross, suddenly, we remember who He is and who we are.

“As God is exalted to the right place in our lives, a thousand problems are solved all at once." AW Tozer

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. Begin making a list of what you are thankful to God for today. Let your prayers of need stem from a heart of Thanksgiving.

2. Begin strategizing how to implement the Sabbath in your household.

3. Take a few moments each day to remember the death and resurrection of Christ.

PRAYER PROMPT:

Father, help me remember Christ's broken body and pour out blood, which I need today and every day.
