Between Borders

DAY 2 OF 5

Love One Another

The Petrosyan family were forced to flee the only country they had ever known. They faced new and difficult challenges when they arrived as refugees in Russia. The family never wanted to leave their home, but they were hopeful their new land would be welcoming. It wasn’t.

Except for the pastor and the people of a small church in their new land—they went above and beyond what the family could have expected or even asked for. In fact, Violetta is left wondering, “what do you want from us?”

God not only expects us to accept one another, He commands that we also love one another. This is not always easy, especially when we don’t know each other—and we aren’t willing to make the effort to do so.

It’s easy for differences in culture, ethnicity, religion, and many other things to become barriers if we focus on them. But if we focus instead on our commonalities and the fact that God created each of us, loving others can become a way of life.

When we choose to begin to see others from God’s perspective of agape—unconditional love—our eyes and our minds are opened to a whole new world of wonders. From the world’s perspective, the little Russian church had nothing to gain by reaching out to the Armenian refugee family. From a Christian viewpoint, they would be ignoring Jesus’ teaching by not loving their new neighbors.

With God’s help, as we practice truly loving and serving others, our self-centered viewpoints will diminish, and our joy will increase. Loving one another is a win-win situation for everyone.
