Ivan and Violetta Petrosyan and their two daughters were Armenian by heritage, but they were born and lived in the country of Azerbaijan. Both countries were members of the Soviet Union, but when that began to crumble, the Armenians faced persecution as the Azerbaijanis aimed to “ethnically cleanse” their nation. Fearing for their lives, the Petrosyan family fled to Volgograd, Russia, leaving everything they knew—their careers, home, and comfortable lives—behind.

What would it be like to rebuild your life with virtually no resources? To rely on the kindness of others for help? To swallow your pride and lower your standards to provide for your family?

The Petrosyans found friendship and inspiration in a small, humble church congregation. Although raised in a culture of communism, slowly their perspectives changed as they learned about God’s love. According to the pastor at their church, to “love your neighbor means (to love) everyone you come in contact with.”

We would probably all agree with his statement that “today the world is divided, and families are fragmented by differing political ideologies.” BUT, as Christians, our response should be different. We are called to love “everyone we come in contact with.”
