Compass
You see sadness, suffering, pain. Sometimes it’s far away—on the news, for example—but sometimes it’s right in front of you. Suddenly, it invades your own life, and you find yourself in the middle of it. Someone gets sick, you lose your job, or your business collapses. The way you feel is hard to put into words.
Grief.
Deep pain.
And sometimes, it’s all you can think about.
In The Chosen, there’s a moment where Eden, Peter’s wife, has experienced a miscarriage. The pain and sorrow she feels… words can’t fully capture it here. If you’ve seen the episode, you’ll know.
Where do you find support in such moments? What gives you direction? How do you move forward? How do you start living again?
Two Things to Consider:
1. Make Room for Your Pain
The first thing is to allow space for your pain—or make space for it. That loss you feel is real, and you don’t need to push past it. Take your time. The fact that it hurts so much shows how important it was—and, in a way, still is—to you.
Grieve. Let it be a verb, an active process. Move through it, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it.
One of the beautiful moments in The Chosen is when Mary—despite carrying her own pain—sits next to Eden. Literally, just sits beside her.
Who are you sitting next to?
2. You Need a Compass
The second thing is to find a compass—something to guide you and give you direction. Eden wants to talk only to Jesus, which is perfectly understandable. But Mary gently points her toward the words of God: “So go to synagogue. It’s not about the rabbi; it’s about the words of God.”
God’s words.
His words are described as a lamp to your feet and a light on your path. If you’ve ever walked in the dark with a flashlight, you’ll understand the image. That’s what God’s word wants to be for you.
•To give you light.
•To provide direction.
•To inspire hope.
•To show you a way out.
God’s word is your compass.
When you’re lost in the dark, let His words guide you. When the weight of grief feels overwhelming, let His promises offer hope. You don’t have to figure it all out at once. Let His light lead you, one step at a time.
Here are some questions to reflect on:
- "You need to grieve” – Are there things in your life that you still need to process or work through?
- Who or what do you need to help you in that process?
- What role does God’s word have in your healing journey?
Prayer: “Lord Jesus, this life is sometimes very beautiful, but at times also very complicated. The brokenness, both far away and close by, affects me. It hurts. Lord, I bring it all to You. It’s too much for me. Too big, too deep. I ask You for guidance, for comfort, for help. Lord, You know my situation: […] I reach out to You for help. Lord, I need Your words. Would You speak them to me today? Amen.”
