Sustenance (S3-E8)

DAY 1 OF 4

‘You of Little Faith’

In a conversation with His disciples, Jesus says:

“If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move.”

Jesus places the emphasis on faith.

•Do you have faith?
•How is your faith?

Let’s explore two perspectives:

Perspective 1: “I Need More Faith”

When faced with challenges, it’s easy to think:

“My situation is too difficult, too big, too impossible for me to handle. I need more faith.”

In the Gospel of Luke, the disciples echo this thought:“Increase our faith!” They see faith as something that must grow in proportion to the problems they face—a counterbalance to the overwhelming circumstances of life.

But in this passage, Jesus offers a different perspective.

Perspective 2: “Where Is Your Faith Placed?”

For Jesus, it’s not about how big your faith is; it’s about whether you have faith and where it is placed. Or, as said in this episode of The Chosen: “It’s not about size, Philip. It’s about who your faith is in.”

If you focus on the size of your faith, the pressure falls on you.

But Jesus shifts the focus: it’s not about the quantity of your faith but the object of your faith.

Trust vs. Faith

Let’s reframe the question: Who or what do you trust in?

•Your wealth?
•Your health?
•Your influence or knowledge?
•Or is your trust in Jesus?

Faith is about trust. And trust, by its nature, isn’t measured in size—it’s about the foundation you’re standing on.

A Practical Example: Abseiling (rappelling)

Imagine abseiling down a steep cliff. You stand at the edge, lean back, and let all your weight rest on a single rope. To succeed, you must completely trust that rope.

Here’s the key:

The strength of the rope doesn’t depend on the amount of trust you have in it. Whether you trust it a little or a lot, the rope remains strong and capable of holding you.

It’s the same with Jesus.

The Takeaway

It’s not about how much faith you can muster but about placing your faith in Jesus.

•Whether your faith feels small or large, it doesn’t change who He is.

•He is strong enough to hold you, no matter what you face.

•With Him as your foundation, you are secure.

Jesus doesn’t let go. He doesn’t fail. Place your trust in Him—and let Him be the one who carries you.

Here are some questions to reflect on:

  • Do you believe in Jesus?
  • Do you know Jesus well enough to trust Him completely?
  • How does your trust in Him show itself in your life today?

Prayer: “Lord Jesus, today I come to You. There are things in my life that I place my trust in apart from You. I think of […]. But today I want to say again, Lord, I want to place my trust in You alone, to build my life on You alone. Help me to live that way today. Not to focus on the size of my faith, but on You as the object of my faith. Amen.”
