Born to Save: The Christmas Story of Jesusಮಾದರಿ
Godliness in the Face of Hurt
When Joseph discovered Mary was pregnant, his world was turned upside down. Matthew 1:19 tells us that he was a just man committed to doing what was right, even when he believed Mary had betrayed him. In the face of this perceived unfaithfulness, Joseph chose compassion over vengeance, planning to divorce her quietly. This response reveals godliness that seeks peace and refuses to harm, even when deeply hurt.
Joseph’s decision wasn’t rooted in mere affection for Mary; it came from his integrity. The culture allowed for a public divorce that would bring shame upon Mary, yet Joseph resolved to protect her dignity, modeling both truth and mercy. This godly character was not vengeful or self-centered, but peaceful, compassionate, and kind. He sought a private solution, guided by a commitment to righteousness, not by a desire to retaliate.
In a world that often glorifies getting even, Joseph’s actions stand out. He wasn’t driven by pride or self-justification; he simply sought to do what was right. Godliness seeks healing, not harm. True followers of Christ, like Joseph, are marked by a spirit that refrains from vengeance. They strive to reflect the heart of God, who reserves vengeance for Himself. When we take revenge, we step into territory that belongs to God alone and reveal a lack of trust in His justice.
This restraint is more than a passive approach to conflict—it’s a proactive pursuit of peace. Scripture encourages us not to repay evil with evil. Rather, we should wait for the Lord, trusting Him to deliver justice. Joseph’s response exemplifies this wisdom. Godly people trust God’s timing and justice, knowing that He sees and understands every wrong. They focus on love, even when they feel hurt, following Christ’s example of kindness to the ungrateful and the wicked.
How do we respond when wronged, misunderstood, or hurt? The desire to “make things right” on our own terms can feel powerful, but it’s ultimately self-destructive and contrary to God’s heart. Scripture calls us to release the need for revenge and instead reflect God’s love, seeking what’s best for others—even those who may have wronged us. Joseph’s choice shows us that true godliness moves beyond our personal rights and focuses on compassion and peace.
Today, if you find yourself harboring thoughts of revenge or resentment, remember Joseph’s example. Choose a path that honors God by leaving the outcome in His hands. Seek peace, act with compassion, and let your actions reflect the grace you have received. Let go of the need for retaliation, and trust that God sees, cares, and will ultimately make things right.
