How Can We Put on All God's Weapons?

DAY 2 OF 3

When the apostle Paul writes the epistle to the Ephesians, we need to realize that there is a context to consider. Paul refers to the armor of the Roman soldier when he speaks of the armor of the Christian.

I'd like to briefly share with you here the reality of the Roman soldier's armor to back up my words:

"The armor of the Christian refers to the Roman armor composed of seven pieces. The complete suit of armor weighed between thirty and thirty-five kilos. The fact that a soldier went into battle with thirty to thirty-five kilos on him shows that he must have had vigorous musculature. Each soldier also carried a backpack weighing around twenty-seven kilos. A soldier equipped for war therefore had fifty-five to sixty kilos of weight on him, including his armor and bag!"

Faced with this reality, it's easy to understand that a soldier had to have a robust musculature in order to be able to wear his armor and then use it on the battlefield. If the soldier was puny, he couldn't even wear it.

The Greek word translated as "clothe yourselves" (Ephesians 6:10–11) has a very specific meaning. It could literally be translated as "to sink into one's garments." In this verse, there is an important link between the words "strengthen yourselves" and "clothe yourselves," which is not rendered in the translation but which we absolutely must understand.

It is by placing our trust in God that we become spiritually muscular. This spiritual musculature allows God's power to then clothe us with all of God's weapons for us. So it's not our declarations of faith that equip us with all of God's weapons, but it's by strengthening ourselves in God that His power clothes us with all the weapons at our disposal. I'll go a little further in Day 3!

Blessings to you all,

Jérémy Pothin
