Sanctification

“But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life.”Romans 6:21-23 ESV

We all have times in our lives we are ashamed of before we saw what sin truly makes us, blindly following our desires to get whatever WE want. It’s pretty ugly-looking. But, when we finally see Jesus, our hearts are stirred.

When we accept Him as our Savior and see His love for us, He does something amazing—He gives us a desire to be like Him. We don’t follow Him because we have to; we follow Him because we want to follow him. He then takes us on this amazing journey where, piece by piece, He roots out the hold of sin in our hearts until His love is manifest.

This is sanctification: Christ making us holy (not to make us right with God—that’s the work He did on the cross), undoing sin’s work on our character. And it’s beautiful. In place of the selfish, hurtful people we were, He makes us loving, caring people, people who are willing to give up what we want for Him.

This is a process, and we fail to be like Jesus all the time. That's because the process will only be fully complete when Christ returns and destroys sin forever. But it WILL be complete one day, and so, with hopeful expectation, we await that day when “He who started the good work in you brings it to completion."
