A 7-Day Truth Talk

DAY 5 OF 7

Ephesians 6 compares our faith walk to putting on the full armor of God. Ephesians 6:17 instructs us to take up the “sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” In other words, while you are getting ready for the day, pick up the sword—the Word of God—and take it with you. It isn’t really about armor, per se, but about being prepared for the fight.

Putting on the full armor of God “so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil” is an important part of the believer’s daily preparation. When we are putting aside our baggage, we need to know God’s specific word that speaks to our individual situation. Although the entirety of God’s Word is profitable, there are times when His Word is aimed like a sharpened arrow right at our situation. Think of it as a word that comes and pricks your heart. A word that touches your soul deeply. A moment when you just have to sigh, “Oh, I get it!”

I like to take the specific words God gives me and put them on a 3x5 card. I carry them with me. Sometimes I have taped them to the dashboard of the car or the bathroom mirror. I have piles of those 3x5 cards attesting to God’s words for me. As I see the words He has given me, I am emboldened, encouraged, and inspired. God’s Word is my sword and part of my armor to help me stand firm.

Before leaving for Paris, I made a 3x5 card that I entitled “My Paris Promises.” I put 15 different Scriptures on it that I felt God had given me for my time in Paris—Scriptures such as Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me,” and 1 Thessalonians 5:24, “Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.” Even years later, that card still resides in my wallet for those times when I need to be reminded of God’s watchcare for me.

Ask God today to give you specific words from His Word and put them on a 3x5 card, or make them your screen saver, or tape them on your bathroom mirror. As you go along your day you will be reminded of God’s powerful promises to you.
