DAY 4 OF 7

The second book of the Bible picks up with a man named Moses. The Israelites were enslaved in Egypt for hundreds of years. Moses was born in Egypt; Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt, hated the Israelites and didn’t want them to become too powerful, so he ordered people to kill all of the Israelite baby boys born in Egypt.

Moses’ mother hid him in a basket in a river, and Pharaoh’s daughter found him and raised him as her son. When Moses grew up, he saw an Egyptian beating an Israelite slave, and he killed the Egyptian and fled to the countryside because he was afraid.

God, however, had a particular plan for Moses. In Exodus 3, we read that God showed himself to Moses in a burning bush and spoke to him. He told him to go back to Egypt and command Pharaoh to let the Israelite people go free. He promised Moses that he would lead the people to a beautiful land flowing with good food and protection, and after a lot of convincing, Moses agreed to confront Pharaoh.

God sent ten plagues on the Egyptian people, the last one was called the Passover. The Israelites were ordered to kill a perfect sheep or goat and spread the blood on their door. That night, an angel passed over the entire land of Egypt and killed the firstborn son of anyone who didn’t have the blood on their door.

God’s people were safe, but the Egyptians weren’t. After that plague, Pharaoh finally ordered the people to leave Egypt. God’s plan to save his people continued - they were free!
