Halloween… What do you think of it?
What do you think and feel about Halloween? Is it a fun night to dress up as superheroes or a dark night of witchcraft and the occult? Is it a night out with the kids at fairs and trick or treating, or is it the darkest spiritual night of the year?
Historically, “All Hallows’ Eve” was a night of darkness and mischief before a religious holy day. Through time, it has become a traditional night of costumes and too much candy. Millions in the United States hit the streets without knowing the dark sources of this tradition and the realities that still exist.
I believe our society underestimates the power of darkness and its effects on our children. Have you noticed the horror movies and scary themes that are celebrated on Halloween?
The Bible explains, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12, NKJV)
As a counselor, I don’t believe it’s healthy for a child’s mind to focus on fear, murder, the occult and demons. As a Christian, I’ve chosen to be in the world but not of it. “They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.” (John 17:16, NIV)
A big question that challenged my thinking was “how can I bring the light to a dark night without demonizing a tradition?” So the leaders of our church decided to have a family fun fair instead of a ghoulish Halloween event. We took the night back from a dark theme and turned it into a safe alternative. Thousands come to our parking lot to play games, eat candy, enjoy good food and celebrate God. The music is upbeat, and we encourage families to dress up as superheroes or something fun.
I believe God will help you make Halloween a powerful night. We are called to be salt and light to a dark world. Don’t be intimidated by the power of the enemy, but “be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.” (Matthew 10:16, NKJV) Talk to your family, friends and employees and bring redemption to a night dedicated to darkness.
Shine your light brightly because you’re a miracle.
