The Old Testament On Purpose

DAY 1 OF 5

With this reading plan, we will uncover five of the most foundational truths about purpose found specifically in the Old Testament. Today, our journey begins in Exodus.

In the book of Exodus, we find one of the first mentions of the word “purpose” in Scripture. Up to this point in the Biblical narrative, God has been dealing with humans on primarily an individual level. One on one.

He walked with Adam, spoke to Abraham, and communicated with Joseph through dreams. But here, God expands and begins to communicate with the nation.

The reason for this expansion reveals a truth about God’s idea of purpose.

The purpose God speaks of in Exodus is too big for any one person or family. It can only be accomplished by a nation; by a people group that will one day be as numerous as the stars themselves.

God’s purpose for Israel, and eventually the Church, is for God’s name to be proclaimed in all the earth. Or put a different way: God’s purpose for us is God’s glory.

This calling still sits upon our lives today. Our primary calling in Scripture as human beings is to glorify God.

How that unfolds in our lives through our unique gifts, talents, and circumstances can wind up looking a million different ways. But the final goal never changes.

We are here for God’s glory.
