The Legacy Journey

DAY 29 OF 31

Giving Cheerfully

I believe that giving is the most fun you can have with money. You can buy stuff for yourself or your family, and that’s great. But there’s just something amazingly fun about giving to meet the needs of someone else. It’s a blast! Sometimes I wonder who gets a bigger blessing, me or the one getting the gift.

I usually think it’s me!

Paul told the Corinthian Christians that giving should never be a chore or an obligation. It shouldn’t drag us down. It should lift us up. We’re called to be cheerful givers! That’s the attitude that makes God smile. After all, He’s a giver, and we’re made in His image.

In the Greek language of the New Testament, the word for “cheerful” is related to our English word “hilarious.” So we could look at it and say, “God loves a hilarious giver.” Imagine what that would look like when your church passes the offering plates on Sunday morning. Everyone would start breaking into wild laughter as they pass the plate!

It’s funny to think about, but it’s an accurate description of how we are called to approach giving. It’s not a polite smile or a slight chuckle. If something’s hilarious, it’s a full-blown belly laugh. It starts in your toes and just takes over. That’s the kind of boost we should get from giving generously.

In contrast, those who hold tightly to money often run low on creativity. They lack a zest for life because all of their energy goes toward protecting their material stuff. But generosity frees you. It unleashes godly passion in you and allows you to reach your full potential.

Evaluate your attitude toward giving. Ask God to free you to show hilarious generosity. After all, cheerful giving fuels The Legacy Journey. When all else fails, generosity wins. You can’t lose when you choose to be generous.

Once you’re ready to truly give, it takes planning and forethought to feel empowered to give to the fullest. The Legacy Journey will walk you through essential giving ratios and teach you a solid plan to put you on your way to living a generous life.
