The Legacy Journey

DAY 25 OF 31

Hand-Me-Downs

When I was a kid, my grandfather lived fairly close to our family, so I got to know him pretty well. But I really got to know him when I went to college because he lived close to my school.

I remember going to his house between classes or running over there for lunch as my schedule allowed. After all, free homemade meals are important to college students! He had some great homegrown tomatoes, and we’d put them on a baloney sandwich. Back then, that was as good as it got.

But the memories I treasure most are the times we just sat around and talked about life. He saw things through those amazing grandfather eyes, and he shared his wisdom with me. He really was a neat man who taught me so much.

Proverbs 19:14 says that houses and riches—and, we assume, the wisdom to handle them properly—are passed from generation to generation. When I see that verse, I appreciate my heritage, and I really appreciate my grandfather.

Now, what if you were a grandparent who passed on the wisdom for handling money? What if you had a million dollars and taught your kids and grandkids how to manage that money for God’s glory? I would consider that a noble calling. I would sit up just a little straighter and take my responsibility for building a legacy a little more seriously.

Sadly, many families just pass a tradition of consumption and selfishness instead of squaring their shoulders and changing their family tree. But even if that’s been your family history, you can break that toxic pattern. You can build—and leave—a legacy that makes a difference for generations to come.

Teach your family to handle God’s money God’s ways. Give more than just an inheritance. Give them the wisdom to put that wealth to good use for the kingdom of God.

Creating a lasting legacy doesn’t happen by accident. You have to be intentional, and it extends far beyond money alone. Your faith and values have to be preserved to establish a lasting tradition. The Legacy Journey will give you a biblical framework for growing your money, securing your family’s future, and leaving a legacy for generations to come.
