THE BEST DEFENSE

We take our defense seriously, both personally and as nations. Having a good defense means winning a case or triumphing over an opponent. We naturally connect defending ourselves with action. With this mindset, Moses’ instruction for the people to “be still” sounds too passive, or at best, risky.
For the Israelites facing the rushing Egyptian army, standing still tested and demonstrated their trust in God. Standing still helped them to start standing firm in their faith.
The same God who defended the Israelites defends us. While our instincts may scream for us to be proactive, we must remember that these impulses are repeatedly driven by fear and pride. We will all face circumstances that threaten our security. Having an attitude of expectant stillness during these intimidating experiences opens the door for us to trust and worship God.
Although you feel trapped, wait a little longer. Remember the words of the psalmist, “But you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high” (Psalm 3:3). Stand firm and worship the One who is already fighting for you.
