Conquering a Critical Spirit: Put Off Tearing Down and Put on Building Up a 7 - Day Plan by Shannon McCoy

DAY 2 OF 7

Identifying the Root Cause

Jessica had always been an overachiever. From her career success to her leadership roles at church, she was known for being someone who got things done—and got them done well. But with every accomplishment, a subtle shift occurred in her heart. She started to look down on others who didn’t measure up to her standards. Whether it was her colleagues not meeting deadlines or her friends making life choices she didn’t agree with, Jessica’s pride began to manifest as a critical spirit. She often found herself thinking, “If they would just work as hard as I do, they’d be better off.” The more she excelled, the more distant and judgmental she became.

One day, after a tense conversation with a close friend, Jessica realized how isolated she felt. Her constant critique had created walls between her and the people she loved. Instead of building others up, she had unknowingly torn them down.

Pride is often the root of a critical spirit. It convinces us that our way is the best way and that anyone who falls short of our standards is somehow "less than."

Proverbs 16:18 reminds us, “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.”

Pride blinds us to our own weaknesses and flaws while magnifying the shortcomings of others. When we view ourselves from a position of superiority, judgment, and criticism are natural byproducts.

Jessica’s story is a reminder that pride can subtly creep in, even when we believe our intentions are good. What begins as striving for excellence can become a breeding ground for self-righteousness, leading us to place unfair expectations on those around us.

But here’s the good news: humility can transform a critical heart. When we acknowledge that we, too, are flawed and in need of God’s grace, we open the door to understanding, compassion, and encouragement. Humility reminds us that we are all on a journey, and it allows us to see others through the lens of God’s love.

Reflect: Today, take a moment to reflect on any areas where pride may have crept into your life. Is it influencing how you view or treat others? Ask God to strip away the pride that leads to criticism and replace it with a heart of humility that seeks to build others up.

Pray: Lord, I confess the pride in my heart that leads me to judge others. Help me see others through Your eyes and extend the same grace You’ve given me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
